I had £600 taken out of my account over the space of a few days.  I was told by the bank to contact the police myself.

All banks have Compliance and Security departments and trust me they take it serious. It's regulated/audited very seriously and banks who don't comply end up with heavy penalties. I can name one bank who ended up 70 million yoyo's worse off by not having the required anti-money laundering processes in place.

The fact of the matter is, the bank can investigate it and pass any details to the police. It then is up to the cops to take action and sometimes it's not considered worthwhile or there is not enough evidence to take it further. Also sometimes it's not just a matter of taking cash out of your account and transferring it into their own account. I've seen money laundering/fraud transactions that have taken place over 10 or so legs until it end up in the fraudster account.
my mother had €2100 taken out within 3 days that bank had it back in 2 more. they let on not to care and were slow to explian exactly how it happed . i suppose they dont want to frighten people

Personnally, as I work in that area,  I would say 2 days is good. It does take time to investigate a claim and the people who know/investigate how it happened are not customer facing. I would hazard a guess and say the person explaining didn't understand how it happened, more a case of poor customer service.

Did you get the money back?

Yeah, but I felt like the bank were very suspicious of me!

Of course they are  ::)  Thats why it takes time to investigate these things, the account holder (yourself) is always the first person suspected. You don't think people ring up and do the old "my card has been skimmed trick" or "my details have been stolen and used online" all the time? Sometimes people are too sensitive about things, although I believe some customer facing people in banks are utterly useless and could explain the process a bit better and put people at ease.
