TO- 5 years of paid taxes after you get a green card not by marriage is standard and painful

Work Visa- unless you're classified as a person of outstanding ability (like world renowned expert) you'll have to wait until April for the H1-B and even then you'll only get in if the job is promised you now and held til then and they cant fill it with an American

Also GAWA- do not attempt this on your own, take it on the chin and pay a lawyer- if you're stuck I can recommend a few, if you screw up the application form and you do it yourself you are assumed to have lied to gain entry and may face a ban on entering the US until it is resolved...

Yeah I'm generally shite at filling out forms anyway so not a chance I'll do it myself. Thanks for the offer but a friend of the family is an immigration lawyer, who helped my wife so will get onto him. Glad I mentioned it on here now as I would have left it a year or so at least.

I had a bit of bother with my student visa when I was in the states which has caused me a fair fews problems when I have tried to go back since.  The problem was all immigrations fault too but you cant tell them that

Have been thinking abut taking a year out and heading off to the states?

As im doing a Masters in Aberdeen is it still possible to apply for a J1 or has that been phased out over the years

How long does a J1 visa last for?

J1 is good for the year

You sure?  I though J1 was just 3 months work and 3 months travel?  The one I got was anyway but I was just out for the summer during university.

Lasts a year if you can get Aberdeen to sign it for you.  Heading to Beverly, MA or San Fran?

I went to Long Island, NY on mine unbelieveable spot. Loads of jobs on marinas etc and you can go to a different club every night of the week. Had mates who went to boston and san fran and said it was a bitch to get in anywhere if you're not 21, Long Island was much more lenient. Plus you have NY just a couple of hours away

It would have to be New York, would like to experience the intense work environment in the city
