Had the pleasure of chatting to him for a few hours one evening.

A sound man with the demeanor of being just an ordinary Joe, he seemed oblivious to the incredibly high regard he is held throughout the Gaa world.

Rather interesting. I raised Cavan Football's prospects with Dermot's brother the other day and got a very muted response. I wondered what was amiss.

Im sure I could check, but did he ever win an allstar?

Cracking player, brilliant to watch.

Yeah he got 1 in 1997.

Cavan played Mayo in a qualifier in Castlebar in 2007, I think, and if one man could have won a game McCabe would have that day. He was immense. A superstar of the game. Best of luck to him in the future if he really is hanging them up.

Stories starting to come out about issues he had with Carr its all a shame that he has quit.

I remember that game well. Mayo switched 3 different midfielders onto him that day and it made no difference.

I agree with all the fulsome and deserved praise there has been for Dermot on both this and the Cavan thread but perhaps we should remember that he wasn't perfect, which none of us are. Taking Cavan4Evers point we had many managers during Dermot's time, I think there's a fair few of those that Dermot had issues with so nothing new there. Reminds me a bit of Keane leaving Old Trafford-there came a stage where Ferguson made the call that it just wasn't worth the bother any more, cruel but life. A big call by Carr but possibly an unavoidable one. Time to start again and will be a long road back but we all know in Cavan it was not going to be easy.

thanks again for the great days Dermot
