bump for corn

all depends on what you are looking the laptop to do

Which one did you end up getting ONL? I'm gonna get a new laptop over the next month or so and, like yourself, the most demanding thing I'd be looking it to do is run Football Manager. Hows the game running on your new machine?

Ended up getting one of those Sony Vaio ones, one of the cheaper ones, think it was £345 quid or so bt that was after my couins discount was taken off it

It as 1.87 Ghz processor, the game says that the optimum is 2.00 Ghz but it i running fine enough, I have the game running with my itunes in the background, and it seems to go fine, though there are somtimes I would want it to go a bit faster but that is the way I have always had it on FM. I don't watch the games in the 3d or anything, just the commentary, and it goes well.

By the way, just getting everything loaded up here, its amazing how much stuff you need on the computer before it is ready to go... Spent ages getting things like itunes, Firefox, winrar, adobe, acrobat etc...

What is everyones essential software they think any laptop/computer should have?? Free preferably

Edit: removing the word preferentially, as it isn't a word!

XP (or Linux on some) is basically because, with the very low specs, most netbooks wouldn't be fit to run Vista properly and do anything else. Its early days yet, but a lot of them seem to be basically set up to do one or two non-demanding things (in terms of resources) at a time. Some of them even use flash memory in place of a regular hard disk drive. I'd wait a year or two for the next generation before trying them out. You can get a nicely specked 13 or 14" regular laptop for not a big pile more cash.

Question for all you techies, just wondering if I ever wanted to update my spec on my laptop, a better processor or something... Is that possible without getting a brand new laptop??

Handy enough to update RAM, might not be so easy to update processor. Laptops are getting so cheap now that you would be better looking for a new one.

Starting to look for a new laptop cus the one I have is nearly 3 years old and getting really slow which is getting on my nerves, I think theres only 34.1GB on the disc, had to get an external hard drive ages ago for itunes and other downloads but now that is playing up too!!  :'(

So anyway was having a wee look there, are the Sony Vaio worth the money??  All I use it for would be internet, photos, music, videos etc, have to download a few programmes for college work but nothing major...can anybody recommend anything?
