Seriously considering changing health insurer from Quinn to Hibernian purely on the issue of cost. Does anybody know of any hidden disadvantages with Hibernian compared to Quinn?

just wondering do most of the posters have health insurance . i don't have it myself but with having 2 small kids i am thinking about getting it. Got a quote yesterday for the family €2k  :o Is it a necessity in this day and age especially if god forbid someone in the family was to get a serious illness

Have VHI and Critical Illness Cover for E100,000. Costs an arm and a leg but I know of countless people who were very grateful of the VHI especially in time of crisis. VHI works out as the price of a coffee or newspaper everyday for an individual......worth it imo for peace of mind.
Quinn Direct for medical insurance.......not on your nellie. Cheaper for a reason, they are slower and more reluctant to pay out.....not what you need in an emergency situation.

I would say that it is a must for anyone with a family.  You can not afford to take a chance on medical bills unless you are really loaded.

no definately not loaded onlooker , its just that one of the lads at work was saying that his vhi is going up to €2500 per year and its gone to the stage now whether he can afford it or not and i'd probably be in a similiar position

think its almost essential to have healthcare now, if you can afford it and I'd almost say that it should be taken out as a precaution even if you couldnt afford it.
It is insurance after all, and 90 tmes out of 100 you wont need it ...now......
but in the future as you get older, you will find it more and more essential.
Would think with kids its important.

Have been a member of vhi under familypolicy (parents ) and now with the missus for the past 25 - 30 years.
A lot of jobs in the past paid for the vhi, in recent years I have had to pay for it myself...1400 I thnk it is for the two of us.

However last May my hip operation cost approx €15,000 all in , and thats a bill I wouldnt like to have to pay back.
so 10 years worth of subscriptions...plus if anything else happens yer mostly covered.

Hospital procedures without medical cover can go into mortgage territory figures.

I don't have health Insurance and I won't be getting any. That may change in the future but while I'm unmarried and have no children I won't be doing it. I refuse to be bullied and forced by the intent and the incompetence of the HSE and Mary Harney into double taxation on the basic human right of healthcare.

It is a real shame that health insurance has become so important that we fear for the safety of our family. We are at a stage where Private insurance is accepted as the only means for healthcare. Not only are we being threatened with our lives and the lives of our family we also watch others get rich from it.

While Mary Harney can withdraw funding for cancer vaccines she can sit back and watch insurance costs rise. It's disgusting.

The rich get rich and the poor die.

If and when the time comes that the private health care system put my childrens lives on the line I will probabley cave under the black mail and take out HI.  It will be a sad day.

while thats all true Zap, I'm not taking any chances and am lucky enough to be able to pay for this.

I read on another board that taking out health insurance for kids is a waste of money as there is very few private beds available for kids anyway.
