Not a plane but an ambitious proposal that might help break Ireland out of the recession.

Ireland currently imports energy for 90% of her needs. The group hope to make Ireland energy independent within 5 years, after which they intend to export Irish energy to the rest of Europe. They plan to do this by harnessing Ireland's natural wind power to drive large volumes of water uphill.

The water can then be released at a steady rate to facilitate a constant rate of energy release. The project, while expensive, represents a €10bn stimulus for the national economy.

Eddie Hobbs seems to like the idea

I'd hate trying to get it through planning permission. But hey, if it works why not, just needs a governmental shove.
It won't be the next manager but the one after that Meath will become competitive again - MO'D 2016

They had a plan for one of those in Camlough in the 1970's, which is why there is a great hole in the mountain. Good idea but hard to get sites for this.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

Does anyone really think that Brian Cowen and co. will give the go ahead for a scheme that will create 10,000 jobs and put billions into the economy? He will just raise taxes and bury his head in the sand as usual.
I think Spirit of Ireland is a great idea, but I doubt it will ever get off the ground. I also don't understand why geothermal energy sources aren't used more in this country. We cannot keep using oil.

The Subbie

It all sounds good and most likely the final result would work but by f**k the snouts would be fairly lining up for a feed at that trough, unions and semi state vested interests and quangos right at the front.

They arent the ones who got us into the mess we're in at the moment.
