Tomas O Flatharta is expected to confirm later today his intention to continue as Westmeath football manager for a fourth successive year.

Last Thursday night's meeting of the Westmeath football board gave unanimous support for the West Kerry native to remain at the helm for another season. Westmeath officials were in contact with O Flatharta two weeks ago and are hopeful he will give them confirmation today. The Dublin-based bank official's reappointment would finally end speculation linking him with the vacant football manager's post in the capital.

O Flatharta, who was brought to the midlands by then manager Paidi O Se in 2003, has earned a big reputation after guiding the Lake County to a NFL Division 2 title earlier this year. They beat Longford and Offaly in the Leinster championship before narrowly losing to Dublin at the semi-final stage.

Westmeath's season ended in controversy when they had two players sent off in another narrow defeat to All-Ireland finalists Tyrone.

Some good news for Westmeath if O'Flatharta confirms. It really shows now how we've progressed under him by loosing narrowly to Tyrone away from home as we did with them now in the final.

In the light of confirming he wants to stay, I have to say I wasn't pushed one way or the other. Most articels are quoting him as taking his 4th year in charge, but he has been the de facto coach now for 5 years, going into his 6th. From seeing sessions and listening to voices inside and ourside the camp, the impression I get is that he is a fine coach, but isn't exactly authoritive. Many of the players are very familiar with him at this point, and I'd be of the belief that most managers have about 3 years to make an impact. On the other hand, being realisitc, he is getting close to our full potential out of the players at his disposal, just don't see that extra 5% inpiration needed to win a Leinster in him.

Great News

O Flaharta reappointed as Westmeath manager
20/11/2008 - 09:06:53

Tomas O Flaharta has been appointed for another year as manager of Westmeath's senior footballers.

The Kerry native has already spent two years in charge of the side.

He led them to round three of this year's All-Ireland qualifiers, where they narrowly lost to eventual All-Ireland champions Tyrone.

Great news indeed, hopefully he gets decent selectors and can bring a couple more young lads in. Boyle, Gavin and Duffy have been great additions in the last couple of years. I presume he got some promise of improved training facilities somewhere...
Westmeath - Home of the Christy Ring Cup...

I think one of his selectors from last year is the new hurling manager

Correct, that's why I was hoping he gets decent selectors this year. Hoganstand has Pat Flanagan (managed Tyrrellspass & Clara to county championships recently) down as one...

That's a long stretch with them - he's obviously very good at what he does.

Maroon Heaven

Good news indeed - Hope he has a good league campaign as we need the confidence if we are to do anything in the summer.
