The clown was from Cork city and phoned from Cork city. Clown.

  A voice in a Northern Irish accent asked whether it was the home of Gerald McCarthy,

Is it not possible that the accent was put on? Would seem more likely than some boy getting his mate from up here to do his dirty work for him.

Is tracing the source of a  land line phonecall routine stuff for any investigation?

Only a Corkman could believe another Corkman putting on a Northern accent.
