Question is, do you think its right that counties have full time secretaries ?

I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

Zulu

Not only is it right but I think it is essential.

INDIANA

the point i think he is making is that in theory its hard to get rid of these people because they aren't voted in so in theory you could have a frank murphy type for 30 years and find it hard to get rid of him.

seamus aldridge was the kildare sec for donkeys years and a bigger p**k than frank murphy imo !
..........

Zulu

Are these not jobs not based on a 7 year contract?

Kerry Mike

That was partially my point Indiana, the main thing I was getting at, is can counties actually afford it in these troubled economic times. Most counties are strapped for cash at present, do Croker foot all of the salary or do counties also have to pay some of it.

I agree that there is a need for one in some counties, there must be a huge workload in some of the bigger counties but can the GAA justify having full time secretaries in all counties going into the future.

As far as I know CP will pay half the salary and the CB must come up with the other half, I'd imagine a good secretary could help fund his own salary.

I'd be interested to know how many of the current full time secretaries previously did the same job for nothing. Also how many would have been inelligible had the post remained voluntary.

Why don't you take the time and effort to find out yourself before posting and then saying you're not really sure how it works?

Probably in the same way club and county managers.

Much, much bigger.  I was in the canteen in Tallaght Hospital one day and he was sitting opposite me and it was a Monday and I was reading the sports page of the paper.  Then another man sat down.  A comment started about the results and he went off on a rant of who he was, what he had done for the GAA and how it was him personally that was responsible for bringing Micko to Kildare.  I worked under him in Telecom Eireann so I will say no more other than that I reminded him of exactly who he was.

Bud - you forgot the old sign-of-the-cross check - spectacles, testicles, wallet and keys.

Any decent full-time County Secretary should be able to generate at least his own salary for their County Board through helping to maximise commercial income and minimising wasteful expenditure.
