We've been trying to book hotels in NY and for a wedding & they are unbelivelably expensive at present.  $450-$550 per night for anything 4 star.  Rooms rates seem to have increased dramatically in recent years.  Anyone know why?

Try this: http://www.wshotel.com/ Very good, nice location and reasonable rates. Try booking through hotels.com - ususlly cheaper than direct with the hotel.

[Edit] Just noticed you want 4-star. This isn't, but it's highly recommended and the bed is just as comfortable as a 4-star. But if you want the use of a pair of slippers and a sweet on yer pillow, this place doesn't do it.

Try www.hotwire.com they usually have deadly deals on hotel rooms. Only thing is they don't tell you the name of the hotel until you book but you do know wha star it will be

if there are a few of you going i would reccomend renting an appartment for the duration of your stay. even if it is just 2 or 3 of you the appartment would probably be cheaper and location would be better.

Remember the number of stars in a hotel is not a measure of how nice the room is or how comfortable the bed is. Stars are determined by services, all night room service and the like. If you don't plan to use these services then either get an apartment, as Tankie said, or go on Tripadvisor and research a suitable place that might not have 4 stars.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

For a cheap hotel in NY you have to stay away from Manhattan I'm afraid. Great "value" in Newark (A bit of a kip but only 15 mins by train  to G Central station), also cheapish hotels in the boroughs, but easily accessible by the subway.
USIT or Trailfinders are quite good if like me you are somewhat wary of booking over the internet.
