Tarring is better than gravel especially when the kids start falling through the place and tramping stones into the house. But concrete if its done right and good concrete is a life time job. There are alot of t**sers around especially in tyrone where everybody thinks they can lay concrete its not that easy. I know a couple of real artists who are class at concrete they'll do the drainage, take levels, measure and give you a price. Also they can put in frames into larger areas then they take them out and use coloured pavings on sand this acts as a drain, an expansion joint, and breaks up the plain area. For around a house 35n 12mm + 20mm half and half with no more than 10% 'cemsave'  tell your concrete plant you are cubing/testing even if your not. Put it down in the afternoon and in humid weather ideally keep off it as long as possible. Painting a clear sealer/curer is worth while stops it drying out too quick

+ 1.

If you do go with concrete, lace the water onto it the next day, absolutely soak it for a few days afterwards.

This stops any cracking developing and will give you a stronger pavement long term.

Concrete needs lots of water to develop strength.

Don't blast it on in a way that will damage the finish.

Also not much of a problem at this time if the year but don't let anyone put concrete down when it's less than 3 degrees.

I do remember that placing concrete used, excluding supply,to be €20/m3 including finishing. Shuttering edges, preparing base etc would be more obviously.

Very True about telling the batch plant you are taking cubes, they won't skimp on the cement if they think you are going to test.

I used to think all the Traveller stuff in relation to tarmacing was a bit of an urban myth, but i worked with a fella who told me 'they pretty much spray painted his driveway'.

Urban myth me arse. Chase the bastids if they ever come near you selling or seeking a job to do. Their vans with tarmaccing/joinery/paving etc are all just a cover, so that they can juke about, scouting out places to  steal anything they get their hands on.

They are some outfit alright!

Anyone  see the episode of Minder which had Jimmy Nail acting as a leader of a squad of them.

Arfur Daly was a sketch talking about them in the show.

"If they told the truth their teeth would fall out"

" If it ain't  nailed down it's theirs"

"Well ! Well ! Well !  If it ain't the Smoker !!!"

Never beat the deeler

I would get the subbie (not The Subbie) to carry out the compaction also, this way there will be no arguments if the concrete does crack.

If you or another mob have done the subgrade, the concretor will just say it has subsided, causing the concrete to crack while curing, and he may well be right!

If he is doing the lot, he will have to put it right irrespective of the reason
