QuoteThe IRFU today unveiled a controversial new cost-cutting plan to reduce the costs of the professional game. The scheme aims to halve the amount of money needed to support the professional game in Ireland, thus freeing up funds to be used to develop the game at amateur level. Philip Browne, CEO of the IRFU, announced the plan today at a press conference, flanked by new Irish coach, Declan Kidney, and recently appointed medical consultant, Dr Alphonse Moreau.

"I don't deny that its a risk-laden scheme" stated Browne, "but the potential benefits make the risk worth taking. With the costs of the professional game sky-rocketing, we had to look at innovative ways to reduce and manage these costs. We took a look at the team itself, and noticed that there was a certain amount of redundancy built-in. There are two centres, two wingers, two locks and so forth. If we could reduce that number, without removing the skillsets that each individual brings to the team, then we knew that we could be very successful. We contacted Dr Moreau, who assured us that what we were considering was feasible. The early indicators are so favourable that Declan Kidney feels that we are now in a position to announce the Irish team not only for the upcoming fixture against Canada, but for the foreseeable future too."
