We have been peppered with moderate earthquakes over the last month, ranging from the negligable to 4.2 on the rhicter scale yesterday afternoon. At 3 am this morning one pretty close to the house went off at 3.2 for about 20 seconds. The whole house shook like crazy waking everyone up and it scared the bejasus out of us. Authorities have issued a warning that Reno is due for an earthquake in the 6 range sometime soon. Must admit that the prospect of one that large is a little unsettling. My house is right on the river - Id hate to be washed down to vegas.

Anyone else ever experienced earthquakes in the flesh?

Used to live in San Francisco and was sitting nailing on a stud wall one day when a plank jumped off the ground.  Then the shaking came, I was glad to get down.  Another time the garge door burst open when there was a shake.  Never had a real big one and pray that the one they say is coming, never does.  I have too many family and friends in Northern California.

I first experienced one about 4 years ago on a beautiful saturday afternoon - my beer glass started bouncing on the table, then came the shaking. It did something to the house to where 4 of the doors wouldnt close flush for a couple of days.

This past month has been crazy. About 4 a day, with the epicentre for each of them being about 2 miles north of my house. I was just about to deliver a lecture yesterday at the university when the whole building started shaking with a quake at 4.2. We were 7 miles from the epicentre for that one. I cant imagine what it was like at my house. 4 minutes later I was giving my spiel and another one at 4.1 came along. I think everyone wanted me to hurry up and finish!

Wow! I always thought earthquakes where makeyuppy things like 'weapons of mass destruction and cork'.

Seriously though I am so far removed from that sort of situation. I hope you and your family stay safe Puckoon.

What do you lecture in Puckoon?

donagh - your idea seem more attractive every day. my dad and i were in stage around 11.30 last night when a 4.7 earthquake hit. The entire bar just bounced for a seeming eternity. glasses and bottles slid off tables. came home to find the holy water font had fallen off the wall along with some pictures. 100 earthquakes yesterday. hopefully we are done now.

I dont regularly lecture, but on thursday i had to present my research data from the past 3 years. currently im working on the neurotransmission and smooth muscle physiology of the gastrointestinal tract.

Thats why I need them oxford loafers.

Puckoon

its your innuendo about my work - not mine. If you are correct however, the loafers and a wly.ee tweed jacket would fit the bill nice

When I lived in Japan, they were a very common occurence as my house was on the major fault line east of Nagoya.  Talk about the perfect laxative.  Jayzus the first time scared the crap out of me as it was only a few months after the Kobe Hanshin Daishin of 1995.  I know a Ballymoney fella who survived that earthquake.  He was a very lucky man.

The worst I was in was in 1999 when the tv was flung off the cabinet  and stuff broken.  The neighbour's house spilt in two, literally.
To find his equal an Irishman is forced to talk to God!

Experienced one in tokyo about 3 weeks ago. It was a bit outside tokyo itself so it wasnt too bad, but I was working in the hotel room and it was a bit surreal

Two years ago I was travelling round Central America, was in a town called Tamarindo in Costa Rica in an internet caff, as i went in the aul doll running it told me to be quick that she was closing in 5 mins, sat down and went on line, a minute later i felt the chair moving and said "yeah yeah i'll be with you now" the chair kept moving and i looked round the aul doll was at her desk the far side of the shop and the walls were moving , the whole place shaking, i bricked it and ran like a mad man out into the street.
The street was moving up and down , the telephone and power poles were waving about like no mans business.
Out on the street all the gringos me included were bricking it whilst the locals were pissing themselves laughing at us weaklings.
Some experience all right , it only lasted about 15-20 seconds but the sheer terror of it was something else, had to go on the rip for the rest of the day to calm down :)

there were crazy reactions to the "earthquake" that happened in england on 27th feb.

i was in a club, wen there was a bit of a bouncing sensation. all i noticed was my pint bouncing away from me, so i was more worried bout catching it!
it was while they were playin feeder, only reason i remember that is cus every time it comes back on everyone screams "earthquake" and jumps to the floor.

serious though the reaction was quite hysterical. in comparison to some on here that have encountered some crazy situations
