LAOIS: Dual star Darren Rooney was named the new county football captain last night.

May I be the first to bust a gut laughing, put the biggest whinger in the team in as captain  :D :D :D :D :D

I find this odd, but not because of holiness' sarcasm. I think the demands on dual players are fierce as it is. Will Rooney be able to carry the mantle of captain of one of those teams as well?

Pardon the sarcasm AZ, but the comments of "not being able to look some of the Dublin players in the eye again" gave me the best laugh of last year.

Could this move possibly be an indicator that he will quit the hurling and concentrate on the football?

I'm wondering the same thing myself.

Or atleast in the hope he will. This will fairly piss off them hurley boys.

If this 'tactic' (handing the captaincy to a dual player) was employed by a club manager, i think it would look as if the manager is trying to get the player to lean towards that particular team.   I'm sure the same applies at county level.  Cute move if it works, don't know what will happen if he chooses hurling over football at some stage during the year, i.e what will the other players think!  Although i'm sure the hurling manager could counter this by making him captain of the hurlers too :P

Aint it great that someone like his boldiness can remember a statement made by Darren almost a year ago which tells you how high a profile our player has.  Mind you, perhaps the reason he made the statement about looking the Dub's in the eye was because one of them kicked Fergal Byron when he was about to take the kick out and then the pointing at the scoreboard scenario that brought a new low to the GAA.

When I am reminded by a Dub that Darren Rooney is a whinger I have one consolation, and it is this.  If he retired in the morning we have another full back to take his place, and another and another, without having to go to Donegal to find one.  And if I were a Dub I would have more concerns about how it took two games to beat Carlow and with all your €980,000 spending money ye were held scoreless in Parnell Park last night by West -Meath for 25 minutes before scraping through by two points, after bringing on the Donegal one as a sub.

There is a fair chance that come next June Darren Rooney will be up the hole of Alan Brogan and the Donegal man and if the form of the Dub's this year so far is anything to go by a lot of them will be sitting in car parks in September when Darren Rooneyt is in Croke Park
