I've a problem with my computer. I can't get access to the control panel to delete programmes etc. I get a message saying "This operation has cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Contact system administrator."

As far as I know I am the system administrator! How can I give myself permission to access the control panel. I used to be able to get to it but a few months ago it disappeared from the start up menu. Can anybody help?

On the desktop, right click My Computer and select "Manage". When the window opens, select "Local Users & Groups", Select Groups and on the right side double click "Administrators", see if your user account is in that group. If its not, try adding it(prob wont work), but that will at least tell you if your account is admin.

Have you installed anything new recently ? Spy bot or other Internet cleanup type tools?

On a similar note, I have managed to misplace the password for the Administrator User on my laptop, which is a bit of a problem....

Is there any way I can get around this, i.e. anyway I can hack the password / delete the Administrator profile/

Thanks in advance...

Have downloaded program on the problem laptop and another, but it won't let me install it due to lack of administrator privileges on the problem one. This whole problem came about after having to create a TCD college profile on it when first going to college. I had to create an administrator's password which I'm 99.9999% sure I haven't forgotten, but all I get is the username or password may be incorrerect message. I've subsequently got a new laptop and am trying to restore the old one back to being a regular laptop, and so need to remove it from the college domain.

Is there anyway I can bypass the restrictions to install the software on the problem laptop or use the working computer as a proxy??

All help is much appreciated!

I have been emailing back and forth the revenue and they have told me that if I'm on Vista which i am,I have to be logged in as a administrator
What does that mean and how do i do it ?
