Any one see the programme last night about the Irish Boxer from the 30's Jack Doyle. If ever there was a waste of talent his was one, had the world at his feet and threw it all away. very sad died homeless in the 70's.

Jack Doyle drank in my local a few times, a family run pub since 1847. One night he hit a fella a dig and a policeman happened to be passing by on a bicycle.  The owner ran out to try and keep the policeman away but he came in to find out what the disturbance was.  Doyle broke his jaw with a box and ended up been thrown into the back of a Black Maria and taken away.  There are still some cuttings from papers about him in the pub.

Christeen Keeler drank in our pub a few times too, they were making a film in Ardmore and she was the ride for all the crew.

Our pub is a lovely pub though !

Never saw the programme, how good was he did he win any European or world title?

A while ago the Hatfield in Belfast had Marvellous Marvin Hagler and (I think) Smokin Joe Frazier in one evening, I wasn't there unfortunately.

No that was the strange thing Rav there was no mention of the World Heavyweight title it was all about the British heavyweight title and he was expected to be the 1st Irishman to win the title. He was from cobh and joined the British Army at 16 mainly to Learn to Box i think he was undefeated and then he was signed as a professional. He wasn't one for training but had a savage right hook that did all the damage. His purse for the British Heavyweight title was 3500 Sterling about 100 grand in todays money however he wasn't fully fit and ended up been disqualified from the fight for continuous low blows he lost his purse and was disqualified from boxing for 6 months he was only 19. He went to America where he acted in a few films getting 10,000k per film . He was a bit of a ladies man and fond of a bet he ended up with one of the dodge family girls (dodge cars) however they didn't like him a lot so he was told to get out of town (gun been held to his head) as he was been told this, came back to England never fought much again
