I think its a super idea.

I don't think it will take away from the feel of it. Having 8 different host cities/regions for the 8 groups will just mean 8 cities get the football fever rather than one or two countries getting the football fever.

I don't think the extra travel will be a huge issue.

For example in 1990, if we had topped our group and gone all the way to the final, our venues would have been:
Cagliari, Sardinia
Palermo, Sicily
Palermo, Sicily
(note: Netherlands had to go to Sicily, then to Sardinia, then back to Sicily)
Bologna, north Italy
Naples, south Italy
Turin, north Italy
Rome, central Italy

England's actual route was pretty much exactly as above (except they had all 3 group games in Sardina, and they had to travel to Bari in south Italy for the 3rd place playoff instead of Rome for the final.

I'm sure pretty much all those travels were done by aeroplane, and I don't think a 2 hour flight versus a 45 minute flight makes a whole heap of difference.

A better example again re travel would be USA94.

Italy's route to the final was:
New Jersey
Washington DC
Boston
New Jersey
Los Angeles

That's a lot of air miles, and it worked out fine.

I think Ireland hosting a 4 team group (using Croker and Lansdowne) would be fantastic. And then getting probably two of the knockout matches too.

The 8 host cities/regions would have to be picked prior to knowing who has qualified, so you may have hosts who aren't in it. Obviously it would be preferable for the hosts to actually be playing in the group they are hosting, but it wouldn't make a huge difference to the other teams if they don't. After all most teams who qualify don't play the hosts. Would it harder to sell out matches? - the vast majority of matches in one country tournaments don't feature the host, so I don't think it'll be any harder than normal.

I think its definitely worth a shot anyway.

The only big flight there is NJ to LA - and we know what happened when they played in LA

The World Cup 22 is enough for Qautar ha. Jesus Christ the players will melt in the heat over there, dread to see how an Irish team would do playing in heat like that, where we have sun 1 day of the year, .  Ventilation systems to the maz. Think it would be hotter than the 94 WC not that I remember much about that period.

Actually, apart from the scam that was Qatar getting the WC, the plans to cool the stadiums for players and spectators are interesting and in progress.
