Bank axes cross-border transfer fees

Tuesday, 27th November 2007 02.16pm

National Irish Bank and its sister company Northern Bank have today announced the abolition of fees for electronic cross-border transfers, between customer accounts in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.

Until now, customers transferring funds between the two banks were charged E10 for South to North transfers and 12 for North to South transfers.

This change in policy by National Irish Bank and Northern Bank - the first such move by any bank in Ireland - means that cross-border transactions can now be conducted for free. It has been facilitated by the introduction of new Danske Bank technology.

Kevin Gallen, Deputy Chief Executive, National Irish Bank, said; "With new technology now in place, the cost to the bank in processing such transfers has been significantly reduced, and we are now able to pass this saving on to our customers. This is a strong endorsement of the benefits we can pass on to our customers as a direct result of our continued commitment to improving our systems through investment in technology."

I'd say go to the Northern/NIB and when you close your BOI account tell them why.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

Sounds like this could work for me.  I'll call into the NIB in Dundalk to see what they will do for me.  I'll let you know what the story is...  cheers

we have a worker from Armagh, lives there full time but is paid through a northern account. Im not sure how it works but he is employed through an agency.

How exactly do you become entitled to mortgage relief in the South? Does your company have to be based in the South?

youbetterbelieveit

No your principal private residence must be within the state and also you must be resident in the state.

gerrykeegan - Cheers man.  I've opened an account in NIB and they will transfer money north every month for free to a Northern Bank Ac.  Just the service us cross border workers have been crying out about for years.

Halifax in Dundalk won't do a mortage for a house in the north.
