I see that Skype is bringing out a mobile phone soon, which will be supported on the 3 network.

Free calls and text message to other Skype customers, whether that's on the mobile or computer.

I'm sure I'm missing something somewhere. Someone enlighten me please.

This will do Skype to Skype, but won't directly do Skypeout, so some call revenue would still go to 3.

Does 3 have it's own network? I thought it piggybacks on the orange network?

It has its own network running on 3g. But if your out of range of that It'l them piggyback on the orange network. Been with 3 for a year and happy enough. Great minutes and text deals, and the fact it doesn't cost anything extra when across the border is handy!

An IP mobile phone - excellent. An interesting development but still mobiles are charged for data rates on GPRS for WAP etc so I wonder will it work in the same fashion(for skype to non skype)?

IP phones would have drastically reduced fixed line operators revenue although they are still very much taking off over here - longer term this could impact mobile operators too.
