Weaker Counties get 2 players from stronger ones.

I was just wondering how many people would go for a designated player rule in hurling.

i.e. a Panel of Strong/medium Counties eg.
Cork
Kilkenny
Clare
Tipp
Galway
Offaly
Wexfrod
Limerick
Waterford
Dublin
Antrim etc.

then a panel of other Counties
the weaker counties could recruit up to a max 2 players from the strong panel of players not able to make their own county team but want to play county hurling, this could help to bring up the standards within the weaker counties.

Is this not already in place? I thought that David Kennedy of Tipp was hurling for Kildare plus I think there is someone in Meath.

Is this an official system or is it just how he is living in Kildare, sorry I should have clarrified that the person should not have to meet any birth or residency rules to play for the weeker county up to a limit of two players, is this how its is with David Kennedy?

Couldn't see it working! It's ok if a player is living in that county but how could you expect a guy from Galway travel to Kildare 4 nights a week for training?? Who decides on which players are to go to certain counties? This could also lead to a scenario of counties paying cash in brown envelopes for players!!

Could work for a Galway player playing with Mayo, Roscommon, Longford, Sligo, Westmeath.
Kilkenny or Wexford with Wicklow, Carlow or Kildare
Cork/Limerick with Kerry
Limerick with Westmeath
Watherford & Tipp with Carlow
Offaly with Longford, Westmeath, Carlow, Kildare, Meath.
Antrim with Derry, Armagh, Down
Dublin with Kildare, Meath, Wicklow, Louth.

Also in case of say a Kilkenny & an Offaly player living & Working in Derry, those (max 2 players) could play with Donegal or say Tyrone.

If the system worked it could span out over the years.

Players could be nominated by their County Board for a 2 year period.

Kilkenny might be allowed to use it in the football!

As a county progressed, it might be removed and the normal rule applies of eligible players + any player who had already played for the county previously.

Still couldn't see it working!! A guy on the fringes of making the Kilkenny team isn't going to opt to play for Carlow!! I played  against Carlow and Wicklow senior teams with my Club senior team in challenge matches. We hammered Carlow and beat Wicklow with a few points to spare... Why would a good Kilkenny hurler want to play at a lower standard than that of his club championship?

This is in place already and is working ok. Ring/Rackard counties can recruit up to five players from the McCarthy counties. Usually the player is living in the adopted county, but not always. The player usually stays with his home club. Its happening all over the country. However, the problem arises when promotion is achieved to the McCarthy Cup - where to then for the floating player.

Mayo have two. One from Dublin who's father is from Mayo, and another from Galway who is living in Mayo. Meath have about three - two from Toomevara and another from sixmilebridge. Kildare have three - two from Toomevara and another from loughmore/Castleiney. Sligo have one - from Mullagh in Galway. Theres probably a lot more but just havent seen them yet. The guys who transfer are usually good club players in there own county - but would be a bit off their county set-up (except for the Tommevara lads)...

SimpleSimon

I wonder what toomevara think of having so many county players!

Surely the tipp championship gets preference should there be a clash with a match with their adopted counties! I've only heard of Kennedy and brislane, playing for Kildare and meath respectively. Who are the others?

Seriously... apart from Kilkenny and Cork what counties actually can spare good hurlers!! If you go past the training panel of 30 in most counties the quality is ok but not great.. I don't think this would help weaker counties! Christ hurling is suffering in 90% of the established counties anyway. There is no quick fix - If you want to start getting weaker counties hurling you have to start at the grass roots and not the county teams.

The Club system that's where the changes need to be applied! Why not have counties such as Wicklow, Carlow, Kildare, Meath etc join together in a senior championship and underage championship - each county could have 4 regional teams playing in this Club Championship - the best players from clubs in each region are given the best coaching etc. This can help develop underage players and current players in all counties instead of patching it over with guys from other counties.

I'm not really the most up to date with Mayos hurling scene but as far as I understand this year or last year a new league/round robin competition was started for underage I think for the Suck Basin Clubs, which I think takes in East, Central, SE & NE Mayo, Roscommon, SW Sligo & North Galway (traditional football country), I think it was introduced to create more competition.

Anyo other Connacht posters know the exact details. Sounds a bit like your idea Punxsutawney Fergal.

But it doesn't have to be one or the other , why cant the weaker counties have players come in and Share their knowledge and skills with the current panel and also with under-age as coaches
Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.

neilthemac

Suck Valley League - it has been running for a few years, in March and April

Under 12, 14, 16 and Minor divisions

teams from East Galway, Roscommon and Mayo in it. Not a bad competition.

The likes of Roscommon and Mayo don't need players from outside the county. That won't benefit hurling across the county. We need current and ex-hurlers as teachers and involved as underage coaches in clubs.

That or a hurling fund to bring quality coaches from outside to help with underage club teams the odd time - skills work etc

maybe as coaches but  aguy in and around the kilkenny won't play with a weaker county. The standard of the club championship in kilkenny is probably higher than the christy ring etc that's why this won't be  arunner.
