Louth Exile

Dermot O'Brien the captain of the Louth team in 1957 passed away last night. Dermot was the last Louth man to lift the Sam Maguire some 50 years ago. He was also a very well known traditional music performer and an absolute gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Sad news. I wonder was he present in Croke Park on Sunday when the '57 team were guests of VHI? There was a picture of him and the other surviving members of the team in Sunday's programme, on the occasion of a civic reception by Louth County Council to mark the 50th anniversary. Nice that he lived to experience that honour.

Louth Exile

There is nothing up on the louth website about Dermot's passing, but good articles on hogan stand and rte, including tribute from Nicky Brennan.

How long was he back in Ardee? I saw a documentary a couple of years ago where he was living in the US (Florida?) in some sort of retirement complex, it seemed, and playing a bit of music locally.

Sorry to hear this. Broke Tyrone hearts 50 years ago. However, who knows - Louth's win in '57 may have inspired the likes of Down 3 years later.

RIP.
I wanna have my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames.

Was very sorry to hear this today.  Had the pleasure of meeting the man on several occasions, and as has already been stated, he was a gentleman.  May he rest in peace.

Pangurban

Saw him performing in the Gleneagles Killarney 2 yrs ago and he looked remarkably fresh and fit for his age. A great performer on field and stage, and a real gentleman. May he rest in peace
