Closing off European football competitions to include only elite clubs could make them far richer, according to the American sports executive who has held talks with the leading English Premier League teams about a shake-up to long-established league structures.

The Relevent Sports chairman, Charlie Stillitano, held talks with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United on Tuesday in London about this year's International Champions Cup (ICC), an annual pre-season friendly tournament organised by his company. Stillitano confirmed they also discussed "restructuring the Champions League" – an issue high on the European Club Association agenda amid a power vacuum at Uefa.

In an ideal world UEFA would like the really big clubs in the CL clubs every year as this means they can demand more in sponsorship, they might have made more money selling their TV rights to BT sport but the sponsors are very disappointed as ratings on BT are dreadful. Sky will be loving it, the CL will be heading back to them next time round. United v Liverpool is watched by more people than any other game in club football so it shows the strength of the PL and especially Liverpool given their lack of success the last 25 years.

CL money doesn't mean as much to the PL clubs as it used to though, the new PL TV deal will be worth about £150m -£160m to the PL winners next season as opposed to the £30m they'll make from a decent run in the CL.

I'd imagine UEFA would like to see all the clubs who demand great viewing figures in the CL so I won't be surprised if an extra CL place is given to the PL.

Lack of success in 25years?
3 FA Cups
4 League Cups
1 Uefa Cup
1 Champions League
2 Super Cups

Yes the League title is missing, but there are very few teams who have won as much.
Compared to the great teams of the 70's and 80's they haven't been as successful but there hasn't been a lack of success.
When you think you're fucked you're only about 40% fucked.

What makes soccer interesting is seeing Man Utd fall on its arse in the year Leicester go top. Chelsea is just a bonus.

Quality team... Should be involved as most competitions need a team that the better teams can beat
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Ea

Lack of success in 25years?
3 FA Cups. - granted
4 League Cups - barely worth bragging rights since Arsenal, United etc played their kids while lesser clubs went all out.
1 Uefa Cup - 2nd rate competition for 2nd rate clubs
1 Champions League - granted, a true miracle of modern times
2 Super Cups - worthless junk much like the Charity Shield

I don't think there's a need to re-structure Champions League. Why are we calling it Champions League if the champions for that specific league and season is prohibited from joining UCL?
