Above is a short film I have made documenting my two years playing Gaelic Football in France for the Clermont Gaels team based out of Clermont-Ferrand.

The film follows the team from the European Championships in Maastricht in October 2014, all the way to the French GAA Championship Finals in Guérande in June 2015. Gain a unique behind the scenes look at what playing GAA in Europe is like and witness first hand the phenomenal growth of the sports throughout the entire continent.

Please share this video as much as you can as we are trying to raise the profile of European GAA as much as possible!

You can also help Clermont Gaels cover the huge costs of travelling to this year's European Championships in Vienna by donating to our crowdfunding page here:

Fair play, looking at the names almost all of the squad are French I presume. Great achievement.

I think there was roughly 25 paid-up member last season with only 2 of those being Irish, myself included. The club is completely run, coached and played by French people. Most of the clubs in France are similar with many not having any Irish players at all!

That's class AJ, great stuff. How did these lads start getting an interest in playing the game then?

Mighty stuff! How do you win 4 in a row intermediate championships and not get promoted to senior?

Great to have club song like that for celebrations.

I actually don't think any of the lads involved in the foundation of the club are still around but from what I can tell, lads just drag their friends along to try it out and a lot of them take to it really quickly. A lot of the lads in the Clermont side have been playing together for close to 5 years now so the level is constantly getting better. A few of the other teams are reliant on Erasmus students so their sides don't tend to be the same from 1 year to the next but that is gradually changing as the teams become more French dominated.

The newest club to be set up in Angers has actually managed to get GAA offered as sport to the students at the local university which is hopefully going to see a lot of new people take it on.

GAA has been on the PE curriculum for years in the primary and high schools all over  Brittany in the north as well so the future is bright!

All the songs and chants kinda remind me of the ladies football here. Someone should put forward a rule at congress that it should be compulsory to have an accordion player on your team

Seriously tho great to see football expanding organically beyond these shores and fellas gettin enjoyment outta the game. What kinda numbers of clubs are we talking in France?

There are 21 clubs in total in France at the minute with another club in Angers having it's first ever training session on the 5th of September. This club have managed to get Gaelic Football offered as a free sport for students at the local university so hopefully that will ensure their success as no other club in the country has this at the moment. There is also a 23rd club in Caen in the very early stages of being set up.

In the last 4 years or so it's been growing at a rate of about 2 new clubs a year.

Have you ever had the GAA president over?  Beware though he may be offering Jobs in Cavan for next years push for  the Ulster Championship.

Liam O'Neill was over at the European Championships in the video but other than that I couldn't tell you if they have been over before. I'm surprised that he didn't attend the first ever GAA international match between France and Italy last year in Toulouse.

Here's a video of him talking about the Euros

That was great to watch. Agree about having the accordion player, would be good in any dressing room!

Am moving to Barcelona in a few weeks and am joining up with the Gaels ASAP once I'm over and settled. Haven't kicked a ball in 9 years so should be interesting.
