The best way forward is a mix of wind, tidal, solar (where viable) and micro nuclear generation.

Bollix.

Build a couple of nuclear plants up in Inishowen. Put a few token Shinners on the board of management. It would solve our energy needs plus I couldn't see too many Orangemen living within 1,000 miles of a Sinn Féin run nuclear reactor.

If tidal energy could be cracked, it has endless potential. So many problems currently associated with it thougg

In such modern times can we not take our energy from the cloud.  It would be like cold steam and could be bagged at source by man made drones with expandable sheaths. Plus it would be nice to see the sky with less clouds.

On shore wind power is a waste of time and money.

With load factors well under 30%, the thing is not in any way viable without substantial govt grants.

I'm not going to touch relatively subjective issues like the "suffering"* it would cause the locals and how it would affect the landscape.
If you want consistent cheap electric and want confidence it will remain cheap in the future; the best medium term solution is nuclear fission. I don't expect to see many people agree with this though**
*sounds very much like hyperbole to me. The people in Gaza are suffering right now. Folks with a wind turbine a click away are not.

**I would also expect any criticism to contain plenty of references to Fukushima, Chernobyl and 3 mile island; which would say more about a lack of knowledge than anything else. How well do you think a MkI or MkII escort would do in a Euro NCAP test?

but if a MkI or MkII escort goes seriously wrong it doesnt polute the land for 100's of years.
That why you have to be 100% sure before touching Nuclear power
If you make yourself understood, you're always speaking well. Moliere

So we are all against "windfarms" but want electricity. How many €Billions are we exporting out of the Country to buy foreign oil and coal to produce that electricity?
We used to be all against mobile phone masts too but we all wanted to have the oul phone glued to the ear all the time.
All I can say is thank God there were no nimbys or "action groups" or "concerned residents" in the 50s or we'd still be using candles, oil lamps and wet and dry batteries for the wireless  :'(

An Bord Pleanala decision over-turned by courts: http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/courts/court-overturns-permission-for-windfarms-30459401.html

Regardless of ones thoughts on the reasoning (areas of conservation, birds, etc), what is clear is that due-diligence was not followed by the Bord (in their efforts to fast-track the decision) and that they are now completely undermined.

It also underscores a point i previously made:

Quote- that the planning process (An Bord Pleannala) rids itself of all people with obvious conflicts of interest.
