QuoteLaois to get a piece of 'Cake'?

Colourful St. Brigid's goalkeeper Shane Curran is believed to be in the running for the vacant Laois football manager's post.

The former Roscommon netminder has been mentioned as a possible replacement to Justin McNulty who stepped down after three years in charge of the O'Moore County earlier this week. 'Cake', as he's widely known, won an All-Ireland club medal with Brigid's last March at the age of 42, but has limited management experience (he coached Caulry to a Westmeath JFC title in 2009).

Former All Star corner back Joe Higgins, who cut his teeth in management with the Laois ladies team a few years ago, would be a popular choice among many fans. Ex-Wexford manager Jason Ryan, who has also been linked to the Waterford hurling and Westmeath football jobs, ruled himself out of the running yesterday morning and is expected to remain on as coach to the Kildare football team for another season.

"I'm still not in a position to commit to managing an inter-county team at the moment," he said.

All of a Sludden

Former Westmeath and Galway manager Tomás Ó Flatharta is set to become the new Laois senior football manager.

Laois county board tonight confirmed that at their October committee meeting they will be putting forward Ó Flatharta to be ratified as Justin McNulty's successor.

Ó Flatharta came to prominence as a selector during Paidi O Se 's spell as Westmeath manager and succeeded his close friend in the role, guiding the a Lake County to Division 1 of the Allianz FL after a Division 2 final win over Dublin. However, successive league relegations followed and Ó Flatharta departed the Leinster County before being appointed Galway manager in 2010.

His spell with the Tribesmen ended after a year after his defensive style failed to find favour in the west.
I'm gonna show you as gently as I can how much you don't know.
