Historically How and when did mayo as a county become so identifiably Fine Gael and would mayo folk regard this as important link with their football?
It wasn't always the case. FF had a slightly bigger number of core voters than FG from the civil war down to recent times. Up until recently the county had two three-seaters and more often than not FF took the last seat in each constituency.
Generally the only candidates who had a hope of getting elected were either FF or FG- straight Civil War politics but a couple of buckos from Clann na Talmhain upset the monopoly for a while.
FF have only themselves to blame for being in the mess they're in now.
There's only one five-seater now and FG has two very strong candidates in Mickey Ring and Enda Kenny and FF have been split down the middle because of internal fighting and the fact that they had nobody to compare with Ring and Kenny kept their first preference votes much lower that FGs.
I don't know if John O'Mahony's association with Mayo football gained him any votes as he made a dog's dinner of the job the last time he took over the team.  But the huge amount of transfers from Ring and Kenny helped him get  over the line and I'm told he is a hard worker for his constituents.

Syf, I'm beginning to think that you must be a closet Mayo fan.
Why else would you spend so much time buzzing around and generally making a nuisance of yourself on every thread where the word "Mayo" is mentioned. ;D

Wherever the boundaries of the word 'Mayo' are abused, I'll be there.

Next election Mayo constituency will lose a seat and the area around Ballinrobe.

I never heard of this. But if this is a fact and Mayo loses a seat, it means the county will have lost two out of six seats in less than 15 years.
If it happens, I'd expect FG to lose two of its present four seats. Can't see FF gaining another seat and the odds are that the remaining seat will go to some strong Independent or local interest candidate of some sort.
Enda's handlers did a superb job of managing the vote last time out but the odds are that they will go close to retaining a third seat but taking three out of four with the economy the way it is would be a miracle in the Knock category.
It would take a similar miracle if FF got a second seat but contacts in Mayo tell me that there's enough of a "Core" vote to guarantee them one seat.
It's going to be interesting to see where the last seat goes.

How has a topic about Mayo footballers quest for Sam turned into a political discussion ? Do we blame the Rosquito for this?
