you like a man who can do a bit of scelping with the hurl and there was no better man than Noel.

An old style fullback who's primary focus was to ensure his opponent didn't touch leather, a master of the dark arts who's contribution to the team was only really noticed when he was out injured for a good while.

Hated by supporters of other teams (they'd have him on their team any day of the week!) but loved by the Kilkenny fans who knew his worth.

Time for Noel to concentrate on the farming and polishing a shít load of medals.

He'll have to find the medals first. In a rare recent interview, he conceded that he didn't know where they were. With Noel it was all about winning, the medals were only a bonus - it was beating your man that counted and if you did that, invariably you'd win.

Hard as nails. A warrior. There's something special about the farmers who played hurling ( and football ). Hardy boys.

Hickey had some career. A lot of forwards will be glad he's gone.

Yeah would agree with farmers being hard as nails. But Hickey had plenty of skill and could read the game as good as any forward. He was always in the right place, either making tackles sweeping up or supporting the other defenders. Never afraid to put his body on the line for the team.

Can you imagine playing against these lads in club games?? You'd be wiped out lol

Not any more, the advent of the round bale has made them weak as pish, ditto the builders with their teleporters now, honourable exception to plasterers, never, repeat never attempt to shoulder charge a plasterer.

Plasterers are seriously strong fellas. Standing all day doing walls and ceilings will give you shoulders as big as Arnie.

Joiners used to have strong forearms, all gone with the portable drill screwdrivers.

Their days are numbered, the same can hardly be said for Dry Liners  ;)

Bord na Mona man

Hickey was very much an undervalued element of the Cody revolution.
When he first manned the square in 2000, Kilkenny hadn't won an All Ireland in 7 years and there was no talk of conveyor belts or anything like it.

In fact full back was a problem position for Kilkenny at the time. In the 3 previous championships. they'd put Eddie O'Connor, Canice Brennan and Pat Nail there. Early in 2000, they didn't look much closer to filling the position.
It seemed like putting the jersey on fellas and seeing if it fitted.

Over they years Tommy Walsh and JJ Delaney as wing backs might have got the plaudits for high catches and big clearances that stirred the galleries, Hickey was the effective and understated one guarding the chicken coup.

There was never anything sneaky about him. He'd go through a lad for the ball, take the hand off him if he put it up limply, take the head off him if he put it in the wrong place, but always in front of the referee.
