In light of the Mahon findings, out of morbid fascination here is the infamous 1999 LateLate interview with Padraig Flynn scorning Tom Gilmartin.

No-one is disputing that the guarantee was ballsed up but people have sympathy for Lenihan for many reasons. Bertie Ahern still maintains he did nothing wrong and that the collapse of Lehmans was the reason. Bertie is a proven liar and hypocrite who dealt with opposition in a ruthless fashion and painted dissenters as lunatics. His famous "suicide" comment shows the depths of ignorance and arrogance of the man.

On today of all days I find any defence of Ahern repugnant in the extreme. Lenihan made an extremely bad decision in good faith, abandoned by his party and conned by bankers that Joe Public now has to pay to save. Ahern used some kind of voodoo economics to reward his buddies in certain industries and the unions. To say there was no opposition to his "policies" is untrue but any that was there was dealt with in mafia style. If we hadn't a gaping hole in the public finances we wouldn't need to borrow and could have told the banks and bond markets to kiss our asses.

The gaping hole in public finances was brought about by increasing welfare payments too much, increasing public pay too much and taking too many people out of the tax net. The high spend poilcy was demanded by FF backbenchers, opposition deputies and unions.

The croneyism and corruption, particular around planning wasn't completely unlinked but it was separate. The offenders should be proseucted without doubt. And its sickening that those in receipt of bribes and other illegal payments are now receiving massive payments from our coffers.

I know from a senior person in BoI, who had a lot of time for Lenihan, that they advised him only to put AIB and BOI in Nama. But of course their main interest was in BoI and making sure they were covered. We all know the highly paid independent bankers advised only deposits should be covered by the guarantee. But Lenihan decided to listen to the crooks in Anglo and Irish Nationwide and do what they advised. "In good faith"? FFS.

Don't forget the PDs!

Also, regarding Lenihan, according to Shane Ross The Bankers book just about the last people to speak with him (before he decided on the Guarantee) were Burrows & Goggin (BOI) and Gleeson & Sheahy (AIB). One is reputed to have said 'let Anglo go' while the other is said to have pointed out that if you let Anglo go you might be paying out sooner rather than later. I took this to mean that Anglo owed BOI or AIB (or both) money and if it fell the Government would have to cover this.

And the decision was as good as made - the party officers had agreed on Thursday to table the motion at the National Executive. There was only going to be one outcome. That's why he jumped.

I think it's a cowardly act. Hanging on wouldn't have been brave. It just would have meant taking another bruise to the huge ego of the man. He took the easier option.

As good as made. But still not made.
Ah here, you can call Bertie many many things but coward would not be one id use. To have the balls to lie  for so long in so many different situations is not the actions of a coward.

Delusional?  Psychopath?

From Wiki
Psychopathy (/saɪˈkɒpəθi/[1][2] from the Ancient Greek ψυχή "psyche", -soul and πάθος "pathos" -passion) is a personality disorder characterized by a pervasive pattern of disregard for the rights of others and the rules of society. Psychopaths have a total lack of empathy and remorse, and have very shallow emotions. They are generally regarded as callous, selfish, dishonest, arrogant, aggressive, impulsive, irresponsible, and hedonistic.
