When are we going to start taking this seriously as an organisation and stamp it out?  Why are these people never reported to the civil authorities? Why is it not a rule that every instance of violence towards an official MUST be reported to the Garda/PSNI?

Spot on.  Never thought I'd support a Gaelic Referees Association but there's nearly a case for one...

I don't know why anyone would subject themselves to the thankless task of refereeing, given the potential for occasional violence and the non-stop verbal abuse from sideline geniuses who haven't got the balls to put themselves out there. The game moves so quickly over a huge field and the referee gets one look at an incident and has to make an on-the-spot judgement, after which he has to put up with shite from idiots at the game who also got one quick look or those watching on tv who get the benefit of slow motion replays from multiple angles. People need to grow the f**k up and think about what the referee actually has to work with.

There is an amazing difference in the reaction to the infamous Jim Stynes error in his first season in AFL in Oz, to what would happen here.

This is my understanding of what he did. He seems to have run across a mark as a guy was preparing to shoot (I am open to correction). We know he probably did this in innocence as he was a rookie. The kick was brought forward 15m and it made the goal more likely. The goal cost Melbourne the match. Not only are they still talking about it 20 years later but it nearly cost him his career before it started.

What would happen in the GAA? I think that even if the ref was absolutely correct we would hear supporters claiming that it was harsh or biased or whatever.

Afaik Stynes did it at the end of the equivalent of their All Ireland semi final (they call it something odd) and the ball was brought up 50 metres because he "crossed the kicker" ( seemingl a big no no) before the free was taken. Goal was kicked and Melbourne FC lost as a result.

I think the Melbourne manager publicly lambasted Stynes . An awful time for him but he battled back brilliantly to forge a great career in the game.

May he rest in peace.

15m metres.

My point is that we would whinge that the ref was harsh, over there they seem to take responsibility for their actions and are punished accordingly.

Pretty sure it was a 50 metre penalty.

And McLardy believes it was a trait the 45-year-old learnt from his very first season in the then VFL, when he strolled across the mark deep into the preliminary final clash with Hawthorn, conceding a 15-metre penalty that allowed Gary Buckenara to score the match-winning goal from 30 metres out, as opposed to 45.
