Are champions born or made? (Does nature or nurture deserve most credit for winners?)

Nature
Nurture

We have people like Tony Scullion (Derry) and Ryan McMenamin who never represented their counties at underage level and yet went on to become All-Star legends.

But can hard work only take you so far without underlying natural ability? Or can anyone really go as far as the like with the right attitude?

I think a bit of both. Cant get to the top without hard work.

But the very best players like Gooch and in other sports have that bit of class that you cant really coach

Hard work will take you a long way, it's just when you meet a hard trained natural that you could be embarrassed. Colm cooper is blessed with work ethic and talent. Most defenders are easy prey for him, he seems to know what they will do before they do. He had a ball right at the mayo goalmouth with 4 mayo lads around him, he ran away from goal and they spread out, then ran back in and goal!  Hard to coach that.

You can get away with nurture for defenders.
Midfielders and scoring forwards need the nature however.
If you were any use you'd be playing.
