Can anyone explain in simple terms how first and second class postage works?

I have this idea that when a postman lifts a second class letter, he leaves it down again and says "dont touch that for a couple of days".

Just given a higher priority, but doesn't guarantee next day delivery.

So in affect, spending on the amount that needs delivering and physical space to deliver

There was a study done a while back (google it) which indicated that due to the longer time nowadays to deliver "first class" mail there is no longer any discernable difference between first and second. Royal Mail were even talking about doing away with the classifications altogether.
