I was talking to a friend of mines the other day who was telling me about so many examples like the one you just gave Lar Naparka especially in America.  According to him:

'So long' comes from Slan.
'Do you dig it' comes from the irish for understand.
'Smashing' comes from 'Is math shin' (sorry about the spelling, i know its wrong) mean, that is good.

He is convinced that 'Oh yeah' comes from the Irish for Oh my God sounding something like 'Oh yeah'

Is this true and if there are anymore, i'd love to hear them.

Ó Dhia... Oh Yeah. Makes sense come to think of it!

How can "Oh yeah" mean "O Dhia"?

Does that mean "Yeah" means "Dia"?

Yeah right.

Prononciation wise is all.

Fada on a Mac is alt+e followed by the letter getting the fada.

Interrupting my hijacked thread.

Michaeg, have read only 60 pages of this book, but, would tend to agree with you, at least so far.  Loved Eneas McNulty, Annie Dunne, Long Journey Home, and Secret Scripture, but this novel, though beautifully written again, seems to be ploughing the same field once more.

Ok, back to the hijackers.

Hijacking this thread in another direction...

Had a discussion the other day about children's names. Someone was trying to tell me the name Caiden is a Gaelic/Irish name. Would they be correct as it's not a name I had even heard of.

Hardy

Why would you want to call your child a name you have to ask people how to pronounce?

It wasn't about naming a child of mine, it was just a general children's name discussion and I had never heard of the name Caiden.
