1986 Liverpool v Everton is the first FA Cup Final I remember.
Have fond memories of the '87 Cup Final as well between Coventry and Spurs and trying to recreate Keith Houchen's diving header out in the back garden with the rest of the lads from the road we lived on.
Also remember crying my eyes out as a 10 year old the following year when Wimbledon beat Liverpool.
When you think you're fucked you're only about 40% fucked.

would anyone know who the RTE commentator was for most of the 80's finals? I think it was George Hamilton from 1986 onwards but I could be totally off. Was it Jimmy Magee pre 1986ish or did they carry the BBC commentary?

Gaffer

I bought the LP of the BBC commentary of the 1979 Cup Final. Still remember some of the commentary for the goals.

"2-0......... Frank Stapelton"

"McElroy's through, McElroy's through and McElroy ....  has done it"

"Here comes Brady now for Arsenal, out to Rix, the ball comes over ....ALAN SUNDERLAND!!!!"
"Well ! Well ! Well !  If it ain't the Smoker !!!"

Aerlik

The '87 Cup Final...."Bennett....Bennett....BENNNNNNNETT"

To doff my cap to Tony, the '81 replay has to be the best.
To find his equal an Irishman is forced to talk to God!

loved watching the FA cup all those years ago with the big build up but imo its slowly but surely turning in to a mickey mouse cup due to the premiership and champions league,if you look at the teams who get to the last 8 it reflects on how most of the big clubs dont take it too seriously any longer unless they get a handy draw and are out of contention of the big two, and when they started moving the time around it really started to devalue it and its worth,i think the chelsea liverpool final a couple of years ago was actually 5.15!! and that was to accomodate league matches being played that day.

Credit where it's due - good thread Tony. FA Cup Final day was special in a way it no longer is.

First one I remember is the '83 final and replay. Nearly had a heart attack when Brighton almost clinched it the first day but the replay was much easier for this young United supporter. '85 of course was brilliant but I was so annoyed for Kevin Moran (still am) after Reid got him sent off (if Reid was a similarly agile 13 months later we mightn't have seen one of the great World Cup goals of all time). Disgraceful that Moran was refused his medal after Whiteside's classic winner. Stapleton went back to centre back and had a stormer against one of the best sides in Europe at the time. That was a really good United side and probably should have won the league the next year but imploded after Christmas. 1990 was more heart in the mouth stuff but United controlled the replay and Lee Martin went into the history books.

Needless to say my view of the '88 final was different that Laoislad's!

I remember going up to Strandhill in 83 to visit relations and one of the cousins was a bit older than me- he said it was a great year with Man Utd winning the FA cup and Sligo Rovers winning the FAI cup.
