How many abandoned houses are we talking about here? Seems a shame to leave houses crumbling and overgrown because the banks can't shift them. A house should be of benefit to someone and even at a low price the bank gets something back, no?

the notion that a house is an asset is whats at the crux of this. houses need to be going up in value because of the maintainance costs, my house is 10 and will soon need a revamp, it hasnt gone up in value therefore the revamp will not add to the value of the house. i contend that houses are not infact worth anymore than the ground they are built on. if it land near a big town or city the houses are worth more than better houses on land in leitrim of cavan. (sorry lads)
flatten them and plough and reseed

The inability of people to see that "ghost estates" an be turned into a positive thing amazes me.
Set aside a fund equivalent to the amount needed to pay for dole for unemplyed construction workers - organise them to demolish unsaleable hosues and clean up estates - result for everybody.
No, not a joke - serious suggtestion.
Fierce tame altogether

+1.

Demolition's the only answer for this stuff.

I remember "ghost estates" before the term was even invented. Some of my earliest memories are of being driven through Craigavon in the late 1970s and seeing acre after acre of derelict housing. Imagine all the ghost estates you've seen but nearly a whole town made of them.  Windows boarded up, slates falling off the roof, holes in the walls, doors kicked in. Row after row after row, estate after estate after estate.

Nothing good ever comes out of idle housing stock in large numbers. They might look nice at first, especially if they've just had new kitchens put in and walls nicely painted, but the rats and crack-heads will make themselves at home soon enough and before you know it the place will be looking like Beirut in the 1980s. Toss the lot of it now before the rot sets in. Once the demand for housing returns they can be built again, and this time in the quantities actually needed.

Huge amount along the Shannon starting at Carrick and heading south.

Move the Dáil to Lanesborough, use the empty estates to accommodate all the politicians and lackeys and scrap all overnight allowances. Turn the Dáil into a massive museum and National Archive centre. It is already beside the National Museum and National Library anyway.

In Dublin transfer the people who were sold the pyrite properties into empty non-pyrite ones and knock the rest.
