Leenie, I'm going on the Sunday night and booked two rooms at the Shelbourne about two weeks ago.  They had some rooms left but were one of the few.  Still, had more chance of getting a room Sun night than Sat.

If you're going Sat night, think the Travelodge at Castleknock is available but you'll pay a lot more than you usually would obv.

Does the Luas Line that goes out to Tallaght go to the Point?  If so, would that be an alternative?  Red Cow Inn?

I think it does or you can get a connection at Heuston Station or Busáras. last tram leaves at 1230am so that might not suit?
The key to success is to be consistently competitive -- if you bang on the door often it will open

Are you coming by car?
If so, you might find accomodation at the White House mote on the R 135.
You can check it out here:
http://whitehousemotel.net/
or ring Patricia @ 0868396462.
It's about two miles north of the M50 and I know a lot of Northerners stop there but I guess you'd need your own car  to get here.
However, if you are there, ther's a good bus service to the city centre.

The clarion in liffey valley usually has rooms and they lay on a shuttle bus to the city for most gigs.

We have got good last minute deals in the Real Marine Dun Laoghaire recently , (usually through expedia ) Dart only 5 mins walk away

The mespil hotel is good as is the Aisling hotel beside Heuston station.
