Homeless people hired to be WiFi hotspots - good or bad idea?

The writer is dead right about this

"It's a conscientious sentiment, but there's something uncomfortably pious about the backlash. The work in question (the programme ended yesterday) doesn't strike me as intrinsically demeaning. When you're at a trade show full of middle-aged men and the majority of women on the premises have been hired to loll around in skimpy outfits, that, to me, is demeaning. A guy wearing a t-shirt saying he's a hotspot? If BBH had hired a bunch of college students to do that, no one would blink. But in any case, who are any of us to tell people that their work is beneath them? That's their business."

I'd doubt it's a viable money maker but there's nothing wrong with it.

Muppet. This is obviously a troubelsome and emotive issue....but why do you choose this issue out of all the many other iussues facing the homeless 365 days a year .....in Dublin....in Galway....in Limerick ??

I can handle anti-americanism ...its par for the course on here..but its this feckless, I-will-trample-on-the-misery-of-others-just-to-have-a-go-at-the-US approach that just gets me down. Do you not have something better to do ? Isn't there  more you can be doing in your own back yard ?

What are you talking about?

I think this is a good idea. As the article says it is far better than pan-handling and some of us would like the idea of paying for a useful service which would go a long way for the self-esteem of the homeless. This could easily be done in Dublin or Galway or Limerick.

Your seeing of my posting an article from the Economist as anti-American is seriously psychotic. I love America and most Americans. The Neo-Con types I have a problem with, but the rest are generally great. Do you spend all your time scouring the net looking for the red under the bed?

It's up to the individual to decide. They aren't being forced to do it and if it helps them, why not. It might even give them motivation.
