Is this orienteering/a treasure hunt with GPS?

Was talking to a family in west Cork during the summer that are well into it. Seems like a good enough type of outdoor pursuit.

Tried it for a bit but the more you get into it everything seems limited to those members who take out the subscription. Couldn't be arsed then.

Do you park up the car and then walk between geocaches or are they spread apart? Are they mainly located in walking areas like the Mournes etc? Like the sound of it and I know the eldest would love it but he's only 6 and obviously wouldn't be up for tramping 10-15 miles looking for these things - to be honest I don't think I'd be up for that either!

What do you have to subscribe to?

You get them all over the place, town and country. I would tend to tie a hunt into some activity we were doing already as the basic ones are not overly difficult to find. For example there is a cache in the ice house on the way up Slieve Donard which is an easy detour if you are out for a ramble. Alternatively there are others around town centres - one by the bogs off High St in Belfast city centre. If you go to that linked website you can join, get the co-ordinates or alternatively download one of the mobile apps. Would be great craic for a 6 year old I'd say. My lads are still a bit young. The only problem is when you get into it a bit more you find out that there are loads of different types of cache with different ways of logging your find (e.g. by webcam) but to get into the more interesting stuff you have to take out a monthly subscription. It's not that dear as I remember but as I was just doing it casually out of curiosity, I could be bothered parting with the cash.

Cheers. I had a look at the site, plugged in my postcode and it seems there are a good few around here to start off with. Might give it a blast but would need to sort out GPS - wonder is that iPhone app any use?
