Just received a letter in the post this morning from HMRC informing me that I owe them £351 due to underpaid tax.

I work a second job on average one or two days a month every 2 or three months and noticed earlier in the year that I was being taxed very little from this pay cheque. I contacted the tax office to notify them of this and the boy I was talking to told me that he would contact the employer (Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital) and sort it out. Now nothing changed in the intervening time so I presumed that all was in order and maybe I wasn't earning enough to be taxed on this pay.

Now that I got this letter this morning I realise the person I was talking to earlier in the year did fcuk all about it and now I have to pay back the £351 in extra tax starting from April 2011. There is a sub point in the documents sent with the letter saying that if the employer didn't take reasonable care in operating the tax code then they are liable for the tax deficit.

If anyone has a better insight into the tax system  than I do, do they think I have a decent case for not having to pay back the extra tax?
