I would guess the reason for the idea would be to stop or atleast slow down the recruitment of players by the AFL rather than finance clubs.

What an appallingly begrudging attitude. If a youngfella can make it as a pro in a sport, what right do you or anyone in the GAA have to try and stand in his way?

As was said before, you can't stop a kid trying his hand at a different sport, legally or morally.

I despair when people have this attitude. Why are people like you involved in the GAA?
Well we wont have to worry about them playing LOI professionally anytime soon anyway ;D

Don't get it?

But if a GAA player was good enough at soccer to make it as a pro, in Ireland or elsewhere, would people argue that he shouldn't be allowed or wish him all the best?

Unfortunately, I think we know the answer to that...

I really think it as an arguement it is a non runner.  Dublinfella is right you cannot morrally or leagally stop people not just playing another sport but making a life choice for themselves.  It really is that simple.  All that the GAA can and should be doing is making the choice of playing our games more appealing, and i do not by any stretch of the imgination mean finacial rewards!!  I think the fact that boys like marty clarke etc come back to play speaks volumes for how good our sport is.  Every year countless fellas choose to go to uni in Irealnd with one of the main reasons being the fact that they continue playing their sport there and with their clubs.

I think a GAA based AFL club would be a good idea
