Lads

Off to the States in June on a holiday. Will want to use a USA 'throwaway' SIM card to allow us to make 'local' calls booking restaurants, calling relatives so I need to jailbreak the auld iPhone that is tied to O2. It's out of warranty.

Anyone do this themselves (as opposed to giving it to some Chinese lad to do)? What software did you use? What are the risks of frying the phone? Once jailbroken will it still be the same - i.e. will it connect to the Apple App Store etc.

Are USA Sim cards the same as European ones (i.e. size-wise etc)

Cheers.

Can you not use "Roaming" for the defined period of your holiday?  Do O2 have an american branch that you could piggyback off?
I have more respect for a man
that says what he means and
means what he says...

I could...I am sure I can roam.....but I am a mane bastard so I don't want to be paying an arm and a leg for calls etc. I mean if the Mrs is off shopping the average number of calls/texts for us to meet up successfully again could bankrupt me if shopping in Dublin is anything to go by  :-\

SS, do you know what software version you're on? if not then go Settings > General > About and you should see version in there. Post up what it says and I'll have a look and see which tool will jailbreak it for you.

I do it myself as soon as I get any new phone and am waiting on the jailbreak for the ipad at the minute. Nothing's ever gone wrong with it but I've heard a few stories of them breaking. All the old functionality remains and you can even use an app called installous to install apps from the app store that you normally would have to pay for

Muzz is the man to ask. I think there is a website where you can do it from your phone through safari browser.

Thats the one I was thinking off.

I don't think jailbreakme will work - that was fixed ages ago by apple's software updates I think.

Have a read at this link - there's some implications for unlocking when you're on 5.0.1 that are explained in this link that I haven't had a chance to read yet - I'll have more time tomorrow.

http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-5.0.1-untethered-on-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-using-sn0wbreeze-2.9/

That link doesn't specifically state that that tool jailbreaks the iPhone 3G. However it says that the jailbreak works on all the A4 chips an older which applies to the 3G. Have a read and see what you think. I'd say snowbreeze 2.9 is the tool you need (and that link says that you can unlock with snowbreeze too)

Think I'll visit one of the Chinese lads on Georges St in Dublin.

All very complicated..........

There - got it done using a website - cost 25 euro but probably cheaper than the lads in Georges St.

Phone now has cydia on it - dunno if this will be of any addition to me.

Can post the website here if anyone is interested - took about 5 mins in total.
