It's a one-storey extension with the kitchen, the bathroom and a hall in between. There is a light in each - three in all. The power is getting to the double switch in the kitchen that controls the kitchen light and the wee hall one. I'm thinking a loose connection somewhere after that but I don't know what I'm talking about

Sounds like a dodgy connection in either switch or the light.
Did you try replace the bulb? Sometimes you could also get a dodgy bulb holder.
When you think you're fucked you're only about 40% fucked.

All the bulbs are grand. Would one dodgy bulb holder knock all three out? That's what has me stumped (that and my general ignorance of this stuff)

No one bad bulb shouldn't knock the other 3 out.
Defo sounds like a loose connection somewhere.
If you say there is power at the switches they it must be a loose neutral in one of the lights as they are all affected and the neutral would be looped between them all.
Hard to say what it is without seeing it but I'd say a loose connection somehere is causing the problem.
Check the fuses again to make sure none are gone.

When you think you're fucked you're only about 40% fucked.
