Hiding behind an alias

Tony, you're observant. But it's for completely different reasons.

I've been on the board since either '00 or '01 - can't remember now. Over that time the same threads are recreated on a steady basis. New posters, and some old timers, will flex their muscles and debate til the cows come home. Things like that bore me to the point that there are many 200+ posted threads I've never even opened. There was a time when I too thought, like many others, my words were a bastion of wisdom and needed to post on nearly every feckin thread. You'd be anticipating a response to your own post so that you could hit them in the bollocks. Now, it's really only the interesting titbits that get me. The odd time I throw my bit in but rarely. The moment I realised the seriousness some took things on here was when an established poster pmed be to give off as to why I wasn't getting 'laid into the Prods' (sic) !!! That's f**king crazy.

If there's a thread on politics, you know after 2 posts how it's gonna go and who's going to post on it. Same for clerical abuse etc. I'm not saying they shouldn't - the board would be a duller place without them - but it just doesn't tickle me any more on here. No one really manages to change anyone else's mind! I try to keep it light or attempt some kind of new scheme to thwart the Mods because it's what I prefer.

You know I once tried to get banned for private amusement but couldn't. That's my biggest failure on here.

I'm surprised you didn't get banned for that.

Like a few others on here, my identity is also known, and to be honest, I enjoy it that way. (despite the odd personal insult!!!!)... On a number of occasions, different posters on here have met me in public, and most have revealed to me who they are, and I would never dream of revealing who they are. (that way, they have to be nice to me).....

A few months back I had a run in with a well known poster on here, and he put his name to what he had to say to me, which took courage, and I totally respect him for doing so.

I feel that wether we use an alias or not, we should talk to each other as if we were in a bar, or sitting around a table discussing/ debating/ arguing..... That way, we would hold back a bit on some of the OTT personal stuff, and show each other a bit of respect.

Despite the odd fault with the board, I for one couldn't live without it. The GAA chat is fantastic, and the reports on matches posted would rival some of the top journalists. Plus, I never would have put a lorry together to go to Gaza if it hadn't been for the donations from many many people on here, and the words of support carried me along the road both times. Plus, with the amount of daily local and national news posted every day, I can do without a newspaper.....

The rally board I talked about earlier is a wee bit different to this one in that it is 95% rally talk, and quite a few of the posters are either drivers or navigators. When people changed from an alias to their own name, their old username is still included.

Now, could you imagine the craic on here if that was to happen? I think it would be fair to say that a lot of people would be going back through loads of posts and a few quotes would be fired back up again for debate!!!

Anyhow, it has been a good topic, and I have enjoyed reading everyones views.

most people know who i am on here. It doesnt bother me. It's no big deal cause 99% of people wont know who i am anyway even if i logged under my real name instead of Hoof Hearted.

I dont know you, and I dont like you.

And it wasnt me.

To be honest, I've gotten bored with all that too. I couldnt even be bothered chasing new targets, like, how terrible Hardy looks when he's playing tennis.

Personally I would be against it.  A search on google on your username pulls up a relationship to the gaaboard.
A google search on my user name brings up  >40m hits.
You won't pin me down like that.

There was a time when the Mayo County Board would have paid good money to find out the identity of Barney, kind of explains everything really now that I think about it.

There have been a few posters who have PM'd me to say that they agree with me on whatever but as their identity was know around the club they wouldn't say it publicly as it would reflect badly on the club

I don't think it is possible to force people to divulge their real names or other personal details when they post to public Internet forums. ASFAIK, the only detail required is a valid email address and that can be easily faked.
In any case, those who are willing to use their real names are unlikely to be the ones who post abusive messages. I honestly can't see any way to block irresponsible posting; that's the price that has to be paid for allowing freedom of expression on the 'net.
The only crumb of consolation for those on the receiving end is that scurrilous posters tend to be illiterate and/or have sweet FA to say anyway. Giving them notice by advertising the fact that they are causing trouble only encourages them to post more drivel.
I fully accept that it can be very distressing for some unfortunate person to see his or her reputation and character rubbished in public but I just can't see any way to prevent those morons from posting their hurtful comments. If any discussion board closes down or restricts membership in any way, there will  be plenty of others to take its place.

Agree completely. I tend not to bother too much with those threads myself. Maybe the odd wind-up and then run away but ultimately they are futile. Very few people are going change life-long beliefs based on a post in a discussion board, ultimately all the discussions are little other than "I'm right, you're wrong".

Main Street

That would be the case if you are a right/wrong type person with not an abundance of respect for other's opinions and changing another's opinions (perhaps one who disagrees with your point?) is an emotive issue. An affable (but almost anonymous) person like myself learns without getting hung up on right and wrong.

Although I am interested in movies, I am not interested to engage in the movie thread because I am not interested by the thread.

If we all avoided such issues on here the board would be a lot duller for it IMO, debate/argument is healthy and good craic  :P
