Gone are the days of jumpers for goalposts.

Currently within my local club we are having a hard time getting the youth to part take in gaelic games.
Seems that so many modern day distractions have ment that GAA has taken a back seat in the minds of our youth.
I am managing out under 14 team and to be honest it seems lik Gaelic football is more of a chore to some of them than something they actually enjoy. We have guest coaches and fun sessions to keep the level of enjoyment high together with a lot of serious sessions learning the skills.
Back when I was this age we weree home from school, threw the bag in house and out kicking ball. All our under14s talk about is playing the X Box or PS. Also games like soccer and now rugby, which has runied many of our minor players by slowing the down, have over taken gaelic football as their key sport.
Sad times. We lost a number of minor players to rugby for first league game and struggled to field a team. In truth our club will struggle to field witin next ten years!

At 17, I think I was part of the last Jumpers for Goal Post generation.

Infact, I probably only experienced it up to about 2005.

parents. parents are key to keeping kids playing through to adult - there have been numerous studies done on this. through the parents' involvement in the club. the information coming from the club to parents. events run by the club for parents and children. family n

then you have events in the club for the teenagers - bbqs, discos, day trips away - blitzes, matches etc, weekend trips away to other clubs.

perhaps one of the most threatening issues that the GAA and in particular clubs teams are going to have serious problems with in the near future. Very sad in many ways to see some great club going into decline as they just haven't got the players anymore.
I never forget a face but in your case I will make an exception.

There just doesnt seem to be the numbers within our club and the main problem is enthuaism amongst the young players. They seem to be more interested in Rugby or even just sitting at home playing the X Box.

Even our minor team none of them come out to seniors or reserves, whenever we were that age you couldnt hold us back from playing football.
