Gardai called in to investigate Galway website

By John Fallon

Thursday December 10 2009

Gardai in Galway have been asked to investigate the content of a website after allegations were made against a number of hurling people in the county.

The development comes as the county braces itself for a contentious annual convention of the Galway Hurling Board tonight, when all six positions at the top table are being contested.

Gardai have confirmed that they have been asked to investigate the content of a website message board, which contained serious allegations concerning a number of individuals.

"A complaint has been made and it is being investigated," said a garda spokesperson.

The gardai have been asked to establish the identify of a number of people who posted the messages on the website.

A number of messages have since been removed or edited on the site.

All sorts of issues there. I don't think anyone has the right to get the Gárdaí to identify someone. Presumably there would have had to be a definite offense first. The article doesn't mention that, it just allows you fill in those blanks.

On Hoganstand. I didn't know a ref could do this!!

48 weeks for 'Mullagh Three'
03 February 2010

Three hurlers from the Mullagh club in Galway have been hammered with 48-week bans by the CCCC.

The three players were initially hit with 48-week bans by the Galway CCC for allegedly assaulting referee Christy Helebert at the end of a county semi-final last October - something the players denied.

This was then reduced to twelve weeks on appeal to the Galway Hearings Committee.

But the referee found that reduction unacceptable and sent a file to the National Referees Administration. Having examined the case, Croke Park's Central Competitions Control Committee has decided that the original ban of almost one year should apply.

One of the players - Conor Dervan - was a member of the county senior squad. The others are Davey Glennon, who won an All-Ireland minor medal last September, and John Rafferty.

Proper order. It was a serious physical assault. If we want to improve the standard of refereeing we need refs to be protected and respected. Fair play to Christy for seeing this through. I imagine it's been a terrible time for him.

Reports from the evening echo say Three Co Galway hurlers have secured a High Court injunction preventing the county's GAA authorities from taking disciplinary action against them arising out of an alleged assault on a referee.

When the courts get involved this will run and run. The only winners will be the lawyers.

looks like the CCCC's meddling has led to this issue rearing its ugly head again.

i'm sure the CCCC will have plenty of opportunities of showing how hard the GAA are on discipline through the summer months and as usual capitulate depending on what counties are involved.

I've never understood how the courts can have any jurisdiction in GAA affairs. Seems way beyond ridiculous to me.

Em......why do you think the Gaa should be privileged and have immunity from the law of the land?

Muppet I'm no expert on the law or the high court but I just think it's none of their business. I think the GAA should be left alone to run it's own affairs - is that unreasonable?

No, it's autonomy and it can't happen.
