My mantra is always 'best before (said date) but not too bad after'
Aye but eggs 10 days after is pushing it. As far as I know shops can sell after the best before date as it is advisory, whereas a use by date is a definite line in the sand.

Hate out of date crisps. Nothing worse than a soft packet of onion rings.

Hate that - or when u take crisps home from shop and discover there is a hole in them and the whole bag is soggy  >:( >:(

Or some bastard has smashed them up inside the bag.

In fairness I would be very strict on dates on all dairy products and to keep everyone happy London-dairy products  :P

Simple egg test to see if they are fresh. Put it in a glass of water, if it sinks it is ok to eat, if it floats, put it in the bin.

My missus would throw a youghurt in the bin if it was out of date by one day - there do be more rows in our house about waste i'll tell ya, but even i wouldn't chance out of date eggs. Coleslaw and rashers would be 2 others i 'd fire in the bin if they were a day or 2 past the Best before date.
