Thanx Zig, had heard some boyo in America said it wasn't safe to drive any type of Toyota car at the mo-fingers crossed my wee mean machine is ok.

No worries Maggie, anytime.

However read the information on the site. I only took a casual glance at it, so I may have missed something crucial that you may need to be aware of.

Totota Ireland recall statement
Monday, 1 February 2010 19:23
Toyota Ireland, following detailed consultation with Toyota Europe, has now completed the process of identifying the models relevant to Ireland and production periods which are to be included in a recall due to a potential accelerator pedal issue.

The specific models and production periods are as follows:

Model Production Period
Aygo Feb 2005 - Aug 2009
iQ Nov 2008 - Nov 2009
Yaris Nov 2005 - Sep 2009
Auris Oct 2006 - Jan 2010
Corolla Oct 2006 - Dec 2009
Verso Feb 2009 - Jan 2010
Avensis Nov 2008 - Dec 2009
RAV4 Nov 2005 - Nov 2009

AdvertisementThe total number of vehicles involved in the recall in Ireland is approximately 26,000. However two of the most popular Toyota models, the 1.4 petrol Corolla and 1.4 petrol Auris are not included in the recall.

The recall is a direct response to the possibility that the accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in extremely rare instances, become worn. This progressive wear when combined with certain operating and environmental conditions, can cause friction in the mechanism to increase and intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being harder to depress, slow to return or stick in a partially open position.

Toyota's engineers have developed, and rigorously tested a solution, that involves reinforcing the accelerator pedal assembly by installing a precision cut steel reinforcement which eliminates the excess friction that has caused the pedals to stick in rare instances.

Commenting on the situation Mark Teevan, After Sales Director, Toyota Ireland said:

'Our primary concern has been, and continues to be, the safety and peace of mind of our customers. Our focus now is to establish the specific vehicles which are to be included in the recall here in Ireland.

'We will then confirm owner contact details through the Dept of the Environment's Vehicle Registration Office in Shannon and following this we will contact owners of affected vehicles directly by post.

'We anticipate sending the first batch of letters within 10 days. The first shipment of parts for the recall will begin arriving in Ireland next week. All costs associated with this recall will be borne by Toyota and not our customers.

'Through our network we will have the capacity to undertake 1,100 repairs per day and it is our intention to extend the opening hours of our dealers' after sales facilities to expedite the entire process.

'I would stress that the possibility of a defective accelerator pedal in any vehicle is extremely remote, none the less Toyota's policy is to put its customers first, in all circumstances and we do fully appreciate the concern that owners of affected vehicles may feel.

'Should an owner of a vehicle in the identified group have a particular concern then they should contact their local Toyota Dealer or call our dedicated Helpline 01 4190222

Anyone know how much this is costing Toyota as I heard they were recalling something like 8 million vehicles? Ouch!

The designer of that particular component is probably lying in Tokyo with a sword sticking out of his chest.

They probably got their best sum doer to work out that it was better than a few thousand lawsuits.
