Declan, you've gotta to go the Gaucho restaurant at Canary Wharf when you're there.

Heading over this weekend and staying in Oxford Street area, any advise on a good place to watch the Rugby Saturday evening?

Was over in London for the Ireland england game and ended up in an Irish bar Waxy O Connors which is of Piccadilly. Great craic and there was a good atmosphere there. We ended up staying there the whole evening. I think O neills is close by there aswell. So if my London Geography is right I don't think that's too far from Oxford Street.

Not sure where you are flying into but if you are flying into Gatwick I would recommned the Victoria station area. The Gatwick express will take you right in there and has been mentioned before there are a couple of good pubs in the area, as well as a range of restaurants. There are also a good number of theatres in the area if you want to catch a show. The Sight-seeing bus leaves from the front of Victoria station, a good way of getting all the main sights if you don't mind a bit of "Genuine cockney humour" from the tour guides and there are 2 (possibly 3) different tube lines running from there which will cover a lot of the rest of London for you.

OTB - I was in London last week myself for 2 nights.
I managed to get a 5 star hotel for €270 in total for the 2 nights on lastminute.com.
It was the Hyatt Regency hotel near Matble Arch tube. Nice hotel in a great location (very close to Oxford Street, Hyde Park etc).
It was one of those "top secret hotels" on lastminute.com but it is easy to find out before you book which hotel it is based on the hotel description. There are even websites that match the description to the name of the hotel for you.Apparently the reason that 4 and 5 star hotels do this is because they want to flog off the rooms but don't want to be associated with the lower prices as it may be seen to de-value the hotel.
I checked the hotels own website for the nights we stayed and the price was £300 sterling per room per night for the exact same room type we got for €135 per night on lastminute.com.

London is a lovely city - well worth a visit.

My iteniary when people come to visiit generally starts in Greenwich Park which has possibly the best views of the CIty and is where time begins.  We then take a boat trip down the Thames past Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge etc. Get off at Westminster with the Houses of Parliment and Big Ben on one side of the river and the London Eye on the other.  A short walk to Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey.  Then through Hyde Park to Leicester Square / Picadilly Circus where the tour ends with a rake of drink in O'Neills and Waxy O'Connors and possibly a feed in Chinatown

Just back from London. I expected Big Ben to be.... well bigger.

Lovely city, went to the Apollo to see Dylan Moran.
