Anyone ever bought stuff in Harvey Norman?  I remember last year they ran an ad about haggling your best price and no reasonable offer refused and wondered if anyone had tried it?

I did recently, did haggle with them and got the price down - however harvey norman in the north are supposedly deared than the south.
- there was prce comparisons done with certain goods - dishwashers, cooker, tv's - and they were priced it in all of Ireland not just south and often belfast stores were dearer - then that could be partly with exchange rate too.

best bet is to get prices, go to other stores - eg DID in the south are good - and get their best price.
Go to other harvey normans and get their best price using the eg DID best price and then go back to your original harvey norman tell them the eg DID price, the other harvey norman price and then tell them to better it and that the other harvey norman offered free delivery !

Thats a lot of work, a lot of petrol and a lot of time.  I have bought a lot of stuff off www.elara.ie or www.komplett.ie and found them both good.  And that is a lot of times I have used the words ' a lot'.
One day I got two 42" flat screeen TV's delivered down to a pub that was being revamped in Laois and the electrician said one of them was faulty.  That was on a Friday and they had a new replacement ready for me to pick up on Monday in a straight exchange.  (As it happened the first unit was not faulty after all, just the electrician was a bit of an eejit)
" Laois ? You can't drink pints of Guinness and talk sh*te in a pub, and play football the next day"

meanhoor alright !

Bud - its handy for me as all those shops are in easy access, and once you have a starting price, you just phone the others for their price reductions (eg I didnt have to set foot in DID lucan or Harvery norman swords- just rang!) before going back to the first two shops again and see who can give you the best price!

I don't know about home, but most if not all Hardly Normal shops (stores are in America and Canada FFS >:() in Aus. are franchises so the quicker they make their money the better.  I have one major fault with this system; they play on the power of advertising but when you confront the staff with technical questions and even begin to mention the idea of getting a cheaper price elsewhere, their interest drops.  I went into to a small independent retailer the other day to buy a casing for the HDD I removed from my laptop.  It was $20 which is cheaper than I'd expected to pay.  The place was packed and I asked the assistant if there was something on, but there wasn't; it's just that the people in the shop knew what they wanted, the shop provided it and they were a helluva lot cheaper than Hardly Normal.  HN have huge advertising campaigns and are pretty slick at it too.  However markup can be as much as 150%.  And it sickens me when the shitty consumer affairs and news programmes on commercial stations have interviews with Gerry Harvey when there is a up- or downturn in the economy.  Talk about free advertising.  He never fails to mention about the number of people that are still buying TVs blah blah blah.
To find his equal an Irishman is forced to talk to God!
