For burning CDs I use Windows Media player and it good.  Don't know what its like for photos though.

Is it necessary to be able to play the fiddle while burning CDs with this software?

Eh, if you mean is it easy to use the answer is yes. It comes with a wizard that quickly guides you to burn the type of files u have. It is also good for burning image files (.iso etc) which dvd's and software downloads often come in that format.
