Best thing u can do is catch one of them and nail it to a tree. That will send out a message to the rest of them that ur not to be messed with  ;D

Hardy

Better to take it alive and tie it by the leg to a post out in the open where they can all see it.

And if u wanted to make it clear to them all u could hang a sign round its neck sayin "this is what happens to bad midges"

You can get repellent plants and certain trees that is supposed to keep them away.

I think they hatch from water so see if there is any slow moving streams or water around the house? They also seem to be near the shelter of leaves and trees.

Also they hate any type of smoke so if you need to be in the garden, maybe buy a garden fire grate light a fire in it.

Probably has something to do with it.

But seriously, I know friends that have a house near a lake and they are tortured by them so when they have a BBQ or are outside in the summer evenings the fire grate is a great job. The trees and plants that have natural repellent work too.

One last thing you could try is install a powerful outside light, the types that illuminate the outside of the house. If you turn on this light on at as the sun is setting, and when the buggers start to bite they and moths etc will be drawn to the light and away from you if its positioned correctly.

Them yellow candles, citronella or whatever, can work too, but only if it's a calm evening.
